Pattern Drafting Genius-ness with Lutterloh

Last Saturday I went to the SewBrum meet up. I won’t blog it as I didn’t take many photos and I’m sure you’ve read about it by now already! In the afternoon, at Guthrie & Ghani, we were given a demonstration of the Lutterloh System.

The Lutterloh System

I hadn’t heard of the Lutterloh System it was featured in Love Sewing, and was interested in seeing what it involved. For those who haven’t heard about it yet, the patterns are based on “The Golden Rule” and use only your bust and hip measurements. The patterns themselves are only a couple of inches big. You use bust and hip measurements, coupled with a special tape measure to draft out your own patterns. It’s genius! At first glance I thought a lot of maths was involved, as there are a lot of numbers on each pattern. Thankfully there’s none – you just need to be able to measure in centimetres and use a ruler.

eBay Rocks!

The entire Lutterloh kit was a little pricey for me, so I had a look on eBay and managed to win this one:

Is it just me, or is the term “win” on eBay a tad misleading..?!

I also treated myself to a Pattern Master, so now I’m ready to start drafting! I’ve had a quick look through the patterns, and I think this version is from the 70s or 80s. There aren’t a ton of patterns I want to make but enough to keep me going until I get some supplements. I really like the shape of this dress bodice, so I’m going to draft it out after I’ve written this post. Not sure I need the apron though! (Although maybe for Christmas Day haha).

I’ve had a good laugh at the  Lutterloh artwork for the men’s patterns. I’ve threatened Andy that I’m going to make him this fetching towel skirt thing for the next time we go swimming, hahaha!

It’s great that there are some men’s patterns though, and you can buy extra supplements for men as well. I’ve never made anything for Andy, so maybe I will now. There are also some lovely children’s patterns too, just to put me back into my comfort zone and I really want to make more effort to sew things for my girls.

So watch this space, I’ll be sewing up a few patterns and letting you how I’ve got on. Anyone else a Lutterloh fan?
